America has a massive truck driver shortage. Here’s why few want an $80,000 job.

America has a massive shortage of truck drivers. Joyce Brenny, head of Brenny Transportation in Minnesota, increased driver pay 15 percent this year to try to attract more drivers. Many of her drivers now earn $80,000, she says, yet she still can’t find enough people for the job.

About 51,000 more drivers are needed to meet the demand from companies such as Amazon and Walmart that are shipping more goods across the country, according to the American Trucking Associations. The driver shortage is already leading to delayed deliveries and higher prices for goods that Americans buy. The ATA predicts that it’s likely to get worse in the coming years.

Truck drivers don’t have an easy lifestyle because it’s physically tiring with long days, long waits for loading and unloading, and the constant adjustments looking and booking loads. A good broker or freight consultant understand the person in front of the load is the most important person and should be paid top dollar for that service, same day.

You should know what’s involved in a quote for a flatbed shipment.

Let me go through the different types of flatbeds and how we can determine what an overall rate for a shipment should cost.  This information should be used as a base line and not an actual rate.

Mileage is the factor in your total cost, however not all freight lanes cost the same. Cost also depends on freight volumes in and out of the area you choose.  Texas and Florida for example consumes more than it produces so there is more freight going into Florida and Texas then are coming out of Florida and Texas.  So, it costs more to ship a truck into Florida or Texas then out.  Most Brokers and Truckers use and online program like Power DAT as guide to assist with state to state rate costs that include fuel and tolls.
